The reason they care is the proliferation of non UL-compliant, non NEC-compliant, non EU-compliant Chinese fire-hazard "outlets" being sold with a low-voltage 5V USB port attached to it. Once it goes into the wall it's effectively there forever and nobody gonna adopt a low-voltage standard if Apple is going to change their charging protocols every time the Chinese successfully reverse-engineer the encoder chips that prevent you from charging an Apple device with a non-Apple cable. Being able to say "this end is 5V 2000MA USB Type-C connector" will allow everything that doesn't need 120 or 220 to run on 5V 2000MA and that would be extraordinarily fucking great. Imagine what your desktop would look like if you could get rid of every single wall wart.
