I am considering making Hubski unavailable unless you log in. I no longer desire that Hubski be a large social aggregator, but feel that it could do well as a quiet and thoughtful place that one personally invites people into.
Of course, it would be a reversible experiment.
Happy to hear your thoughts.
Nothing brings people out of the woodwork like self-reflection. At this point, I'm not sure it makes a lot of difference. The traffic has slowed to a crawl, so I'm not sure whatever choice you make is going to get a lot of support or pushback. It's basically a half dozen of us reverberating ideas into a large echo-y cave at this point.
I think I've seen more new spam accounts than legitimate users joining recently, so it seems like the current open/growth model is not working. The site is pretty much already a quiet little club in a corner of the Internet, so this seems to be better acknowledging that reality.
Welcome aboard sogre. Gmail seems like a big obstacle to getting new subscribers to this site - and for old subscribers who've forgotten their password and need to renew it. #bugski
I think you leave it open. I know sometimes my phone logs me out so I peruse not logged in sometimes for weeks at a time. There's also quite a few folks who pop in a few times per year or once every few years and while they're not active here frequently they might appreciate being able to check in without logging in and if they want to contribute they can just log in real quick and contribute.
I'm just going to leave this here. I don't know that we need to build a wall around the town square.
Doesn't sound like the reddit IPO is going well, last I heard.
I think you're right, from a financial perspective, it's fine, but I wonder how it'll affect the site's content and culture.
I'm down for invite-only memberships, but idk about taking the whole site private. There's some really good stuff here that should be public-facing.
Hi mk. There are good discussions on here that I value. On occasion I direct friends to them (originally in the hope that they would create a username and get involved in the discussion). I feel like it would be a loss if those conversations were no longer visible to people who drop by. Just my thoughts.
