Fantasy was the Hobbit, an awesome illustrated version that I got for my birthday one year. Cyberpunk was Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Led me to read the rest of the Takeshi Kovacs series (which I was so sad to see him finish after only 3 books), followed by some more seminal works like Neuromancer and Snow Crash (William Gibson and Neal Stephenson respectively)

Did you like Neuromancer? I liked his concepts, but didn't care for his writing, although I heard it got better with the years. A friend -- who also didn't like Neuromancer -- recommended me Pattern Recognition.

I gave Neuromancer a chance, but I just couldn't get into it. But it might just be me because there are a legion of fans out there.

There's nothing wrong with disbelieving the hype. http://hubski.com/pub?id=2880
