There were two books that made me love SF: Clarke's Childhood's End and Damon Knight's In Search of Wonder. The first is a novel, the second is a collection of essays. I recommend both. I also read Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, and I found it fun, but not great.
But, alas, I'm not a good reader: I started LotR three times now, haven't been able to get past the Prancing Pony part.
