Every Man, Every Woman is a Place, a Land that One Fails to Discover

You dug the oyster from the beach at Qualicum

not worried about months with "r" or without "r"

no thought about paralytic shellfish poisoning

you lifted the shell to your lips and, in one swift move, slurped it down, oyster juice running

down your chin

   but you were not a pearl and not a world I could discover.

   Still fearing it will all be taken away.
