Beautiful vistas, sad realities. The opium picture will hit you pretty hard.
This would be a great time to recommend Grass: a Nation's Battle for Life, one of the first documentaries I know of. Merian Cooper, who kind of stars in it (while shooting and directing it) went on to direct King Kong. Both he and Marguerite Harrison, who also appears prominently in the film (as the only white chick within a thousand miles) were spies who spent time in Lubyanka. The long and the short of it is the Bakhtiari of northern Iran winter on one side of the mountains and summer on the other and the mountains SUCK to get across. I mean, fuck your special effects. this shit was shot on a hand-cranked camera.
