Given the options I've seriously been considering running Ubuntu instead of anything else. We'll see, still have Windows 7 which I have no problems with.

Try it out first! I'm not sure if you know, but you can install it using wubi, which apparently is now known as windows installer. Pretty much no risk of anything going wrong.

It runs so slow through Wubi that it gives a bad impression. I think the USB installer is so easy at this point that pretty much anyone can use it.

or test it out on an old/spare PC you have sitting around, like some of us do. Repartitioning the drive of your main personal machine can be a bit of an investment.

Also worth looking in to: Linux Mint, technically the same as Ubuntu but with a different front end.
