But... big government, and stuff!
Even so, I don't see spending as much as a problem as tax policy. Bush destroyed our surplus, and our ability to pay off our debt (which would have saved us even more because we wouldn't have to service it), by cutting taxes while increasing spending. Government isn't the problem. Bad governance is the problem.
Those who argue that government is the problem would probably argue that governments are bad because they tend to be bad at governing. I can't say that I entirely disagree with that. Smart governance is difficult to achieve. Many times it feels futile. Of course, I don't think the solution is to have little or no governance, but I can definitely appreciate the skepticism of a government that is large, powerful, corrupt and incompetent.
