I'm about two minutes into Moving On, just bought the album.

I mean, I saw titles of individual publications by these individuals and they obviously do think it should be applied to conservative professors, but I don't see anything about race and it seemed like you were implying they believed it should be applied to conservative white professors to the exclusion of any other group in any other context (which I'm still not getting). I haven't had time to go through and familiarize myself with these people or their general dispositions, outlooks, and beliefs, maybe that's the problem.

"It's not that they don't support diversity or affirmative action... it's that they think it ought to be applied to conservative white professors."

I don't really follow. What about their "about" page suggests this? They even have a link to a post on this topic on that page, which I don't see a problem with:

>Arguing that increased consciousness of racial disparity undermines the goal of equality makes little sense

I agree, but I also don't see that argument being made by anybody or this article.

This article isn't suggesting we deny or ignore anything.

"Universities also need to steer discourse about these issues in a positive and cooperative way. Leaders should remind students constantly that diversity is challenging and that bringing people together from so many backgrounds and countries guarantees that there will be frequent misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Handling diversity well thus requires generosity of spirit and an attitude of humility. Instead of focusing on microaggressions, our campuses might talk about blunders, misconceptions and self-righteousness—and about civility and forgiveness. As Martin Luther King Jr., put it in 1957: “We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.”

They aren't paid specifically for reviewing things, but it's part of the job description. Part of their pay comes from money from paywalls, and part of this pay ostensibly goes towards reviewing papers.

Yachts are hard to drown

...yes? I don't understand how that's remotely a dichotomy. Another one of Allen's yachts, the Octopus, doubles as a research vessel that he regularly loans out to scientists. He also spends millions of dollars funding conservation science and wildlife conservation projects. I'd say he thoroughly qualifies.

>I'm not too keen on the people in the cars who recommend opening fire on the migrants etc.

I agree, that's just as ludicrous.

>No-one would choose to be wandering around a highway trying to sneak into the back of a truck if they felt they had a better option, and the lack of empathy is as depressing as the sight of all these people wandering around.

That's true, but desperation isn't the entire story. Not all desperate people behave this way. I think a big part of is just the difference in culture; road laws aren't respected pretty much at all in a huge part of the world. My experiences in India come to mind, where right of way is determined by games of chicken, crosswalks are irrelevant, intersections are a madhouse, etc. It's not like migrants are required to take classes on traffic laws, regulations, and customs before they're allowed into the country.

Pribnow  ·  3217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: France’s highways descend in chaos and lawlessness

These videos are absolutely ludicrous and I'm legitimately angry watching them. Completely ridiculous disregard for the laws and customs of the country they've come to. I have no idea what a reasonable solution is which makes it even more frustrating. I feel like countries have a moral and ethical obligation to accept refugees but this kind of thing simply isn't acceptable.

Pribnow  ·  3224 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ta-Nehisi Coates on Bernie Sanders and Reparations - The Atlantic

Framing the article that way makes more sense, I suppose. I'll have to look for the article you mentioned, understanding what the author is talking about when he says reparations will be helpful in interpreting this article.

Pribnow  ·  3224 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ta-Nehisi Coates on Bernie Sanders and Reparations - The Atlantic

"But raising the minimum wage doesn’t really address the fact that black men without criminal records have about the same shot at low-wage work as white men with them; nor can making college free address the wage gap between black and white graduates. Housing discrimination, historical and present, may well be the fulcrum of white supremacy. "

Reparations will solve these problems? What does the author mean by "reparations", exactly?

Pribnow  ·  3231 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Dear White America

This entire article could be rewritten in about ten sentences. The only reason I can see for this debate to exist, whether it's in regards to sexism or racism, is because people are defining words differently.

Most people: Racist = thinks other races are inherently inferior, hates black people/Mexicans/whatever

Him: Racist = complicit in a society where white people have advantages due to minorities being disadvantaged

Being called the first kind of racist is rather insulting. If someone defines racism that way, this article can be summed up like this:

You hate black people. You look down on them. You marginalize them, you put them down, you think you're better than them. If you say otherwise you're a liar and/or you're just in denial of your subconscious hate.

That's very different from:

You should recognize how being white in America gives you advantages you wouldn't have otherwise and not being white means having to fight an uphill battle against society. You should do what you can to change the system, you should not be complicit in the system.

I'm a microbiologist and the Pribnow box (TATAAT) is a common bacterial promoter sequence. I always thought that "Pribnow box" was an extremely cool sounding phrase, so sometimes I like to use "Pribnow" as a username.

I think your response pretty well outlines the response of the students. Misplaced outrage flowing over into matters that the outrage isn't relevant to leading to crazily reactionary responses that only serve to make your point less likely to be understood, accepted, and engaged with.

Pribnow  ·  3316 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Can Refugees Have Human Rights?

So not recognizing human rights is ground to not have rights recognized, but as long as they don't recognize rights first we don't have to recognize their rights. Gotcha.

I have never heard a coherent moral or ethical argument for denying human rights to even the worst criminals. It doesn't do anything to prevent harm to anyone, it doesn't help rehabilitate anyone, it doesn't make the crimes they've already committed disappear. It often leads to further criminality, it often hampers rehabilitation and helps increase rates of recidivism.

Animals ARE included in "deserves rights." Abusing pets is illegal. Abusing wildlife is illegal. Hunting particular animals in particular situations is illegal. Animals have to be treated ethically while being experimented on. Etc.

Just now heard about it. I've heard of Fetty Wap but I've never heard of it before. Not the worst thing I've ever heard, it's about on par with plenty of other popular music nowadays as far as I can tell.

I have a couple of Haeckel prints on my wall, I love that guy. Great scientist, great artist. Some of the radiolarians he drew are just mind blowing, a lot of people I've shown don't even believe they're accurate at first (until I show them photomicrographs and electron microscopy images).

Pribnow  ·  3325 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: Show me some art that you dig

This is done by a guy named Vesalius in the mid 1500s. He's considered my many to be one of the fathers of modern anatomy, one of the first people to question a lot of Galen's accepted wisdom. It's from "De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem," i.e. "On the Fabric of the Human Body in Seven Books." I love how he draws these bodies without skin, often flayed open to display their deeper anatomy, while still posed elegantly and placed in tangible landscapes. The way he describes the body is also rather beautiful, full of analogies and metaphors.

Pribnow  ·  3325 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: Show me some art that you dig

I've always been a fan of Amarna period art. Such a huge departure from classical Egyptian art stylistically, and so very short lived. From idealistically stoic and masculine to exaggerated curves and proportions and androgyny.
