I can't imagine being without a library. As far as I know, there are no community centers in my city - the YMCA is for physical exercise, the library is for mental exercise. These are supplemented by the parks and rec department, which offers arts and crafts, as well as the colleges in the area, which offer extended learning. If we were to remove the library, its services would have to be split among the other organizations, and I'm not entirely sure they'd do as good a job. (We have a really good library system though.)
I just deactivated my Facebook and will be switching over to G+ soon. The Facebook crowd has drama, random updates (like Twitter's stream of consciousness), and reposts of memes and snarky sayings. A few of my friends are on G+ already, and there's considerably more discussion.
I'm one of those as well. I lurked last night, then went back to the front page of Reddit, and realized how pervasive the memes and bad jokes were. I guess it's something I never really noticed before - I read only a handful of subreddits, and most of them are well-moderated or simply small. But I like the conversations here that I've read so far.
