Hi all!
You may know me as asvdveen, and that's my default username on most websites. Most of the times when I participate in an active community, people call me Veen. After a month of trying Hubski out, I found out yesterday that this username is still free (a rarity on the internet these days). I've asked mk if there was any possibility to change my username, but it is too interwoven within the code that it isn't really possible to change it. So better to change as early as possible!
I must say I really enjoy hubski so far. Quality of discussion is high here, and I get exposed to a ton of new and interesting ideas. Hubski feels like a fresh shower compared to the mind-numbing sameness of other social media. Above all, this community seems much more genuine than other sites. When I read a discussion here, it seems like everyone participating actually means what they say, and don't say something just to appeal to other people.
I am more of a lurker than a contributer ("do not speak unless you can improve the silence") but I'll be sure to stick around, under this better and shorter name.
"A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet." Thanks for the heads up ascdveen.... I mean "veen". I'll unfollow your old account.
Good thanks. We have a growing list of options thanks to many great suggestions here. Unfortunately, it's a binding decision and we can't simply change it later, so yes it is a much tougher decision .
blows dust off old post It sure did! Took me a while to get the feeling that people actually cared about what I had to say. Weird though, it doesn't seem to me like a year between this post and now. That might be because I've had one hell of a year, where I've done so much nice stuff like going to Hong Kong, starting a blog, meeting up with hubskiers, moving home...
It's not even a year.
It's a nice feeling. The meetup must have been amazing. I found this dusty old post because I was looking through the #whocares tag file - as someone recently alerted me to it. I changed the community tag from whocares to the one that you see. If you want to stop in Toronto on your way to or from Calgary, we can meet up and I can show you around. I don't know where theadvancedapes is these days. Maybe he's in Europe.Took me a while to get the feeling that people actually cared about what I had to say.
I just followed you because your name has popped up in every thread I saw today. And read your bio. And thought "I swear we have another urban planning guy across the pond...how odd" This makes much more sense.
Contribute! While this -- "do not speak unless you can improve the silence" -- is true, everyone can improve the silence in some way, shape or form!* hubski's a diverse place with tons of different topics to blather on about.
Thanks! It is just that I get easily overwhelmed by a feeling of incompetence when I try to post something. Combined with the Dunning-Kruger effect - you don't know if you're incompetent because you're too incompetent to know - I never know I'm good at something. I'll have a post written up, and just before I want to press send, my mind goes 'it is not good enough, nobody will care anyway. Just delete it already.' But I'm trying to change that by posting more, just seeing how it goes. I'm doing my best not to overthink my posts, so far that goes well!
1) Would you consider deleting your old account to free up the username for future users? This is not an issue I think hubski would have any time soon so I'm just kind of curious, and 2) What are the effects of deleting an account? I feel like that would definitely affect one's choice on the matter. Maybe mk knows?
