The story of a boy, a girl and the universe. Trailers were in my opinion much better back then.
When I was teaching college in the late 1980s, I had students who would say: "I was born between Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road. A decade later, I had students who said, "I was born between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. I am still teaching - but I have never again heard this kind of reference. Star Wars was so monumental, kids used it to date themselves.
Possibly the greatest trailer ever. It says so much while not giving anything away. I can't imagine how cool it would have been to be introduced to those effects either after never having seen anything like it. How awesome. Also, total credit to them, because 35 years later and it still looks perfect. What a masterpiece it is.
My dad came home from K-Mart with a Super 8 film that had about 2 minutes of b/w footage from the film on it. We watched it a jillion times. No sound. I was 9 years old. I was regretting not having the film, thinking it might be worth some money... but just checked eBay. I could buy one for $5. No regrets. And I won't be buying a replacement, either!
One thing that strikes me is that the action scenes cut into the trailer seem slower and lack the tension of those moments in the film since the original score is not laid over them. And while b_b is raising the idea of trailers that say much while they give nothing away, I submit the most terrifying trailer I ever saw, still as powerful today.
My dad's first visit to the U.S. just so happened to coincide with the first run of Star Wars. When I was a kid he encouraged me to watch a lot of movies that I appreciate having seen young, particularly Star Wars. It's incredible how large Star Wars has become and that the Star Wars universe keeps expanding.
Absolutely. I think I'll do what I did for the last Indiana Jones movie. That is, wait to hear from people and sources I tend to agree with to piece together the decision of whether or not I should see it. For me, there are only three Indiana Jones movies and I'm perfectly fine with that.
