I was recently having a discussion in an OWS forum about what, if anything, the movement should demand of leadership? One person suggested that the movement should demand "the US Postal Service not be downsized"! I suggested that it was inevitable as usage has declined more than 20% since 2007 alone and that I didn't think it was right that my tax dollars subsidize an antiquated service". They said, "well there you have it..your wrong, your tax dollars don't pay for it, stamps do and as long as they're in the black it should be okay". WELL THEY WERE WRONG! The post office recently announced that they are losing roughly $23 million a day. A DAY.
The question is, what do we do about this? It's going to die, should we make it a slow death or should we just tear the bandaid off?
We could give a 2 year severance to the people laid off. In fact we could even garner a percentage of the increased earnings that UPS and FedEx get as a result of the closing. They may welcome that as opposed to a long drug out battle.
It's a problem that needs addressing, no matter how you look at it. They are anything but in the black.
