I have always felt like Dave wears his thoughts on his sleeve and you can tell that he genuinely enjoyed the performance. I've seen Andrew a number of times and had a nice conversation with him on the day of the 2003 blackout. Although we've only ever met in passing and after shows etc when there are people clamoring for his attention, he seems to be a heck of a nice guy and a genuinely gentle fella. One of the best shows I ever saw was Bird at the Ark (incidentally, my favorite venue to have played myself) with Martin Dosh on drums (as seen in the Letterman clip). It was a special night of music, Dosh was pretty new to the lineup and opened for Andrew with songs of his that were also really great. The energy that evening on stage was intense. The place holds only around 4-600 people so every show there is really intimate. It was the bomb and one of the best dates I have ever had. I would later marry her. Have you seen him live? I highly suggest it.
No, I did not see him that night. I was working at a restaurant next door and recognized him as he walked past. I had met him previously as a good friend of mine's band opened up for him in his "Bowl of Fire" days and Andrew stayed at their place. Anyways, we had a nice talk about whether or not he would play that evening. He wasn't sure and was taking it all in stride. I would see him again the following year in Ann Arbor but didn't go to the show that night as I had to work :(
