Posted as a result of nostalgia brought on by iamducky. Shout out to fellow TMBG fan's mknod and briandmyers.
-This song is often in my head to this day. I grew up a fan of this band and think they're amazing.
You can't post this without the sequel/correction!
THANK YOU! That was awesome, I had not heard it before. mknod, you ought to show it to your wife, she may need to show it to her students.
Yes, it was. this one is 1988 but I think it has the same sort of goofiness you are referring to. So damned catchy.
My god, I forgot Michael Stipe had hair at one point. That's definitely the kind of goofiness I'm talking about, but at the earlier end. Later on there was "Peaches" by the Presidents of the United States of America, "The Sweater Song" by Weezer and don't forget all those silly ska songs. I always liked this for a goofy '90's song. I guess it was all part of that alternative thing.
So about two months ago, my wife's class was learning about the solar system. We tried to find some good videos but ended up picking up one at random. It was horrible, not only was it completely boring but it got several things wrong (something about how the sun produces energy using Fission). The kids were absolutely not into it, and after listening to that incorrect statement, I told my wife that I was going to put on something better. I got up to the smart board and searched for this video on youtube, then made it full screen on the SmartBoard (SmartBoards are like big projectors) and turned the music up. The kids were INTO it. They were excited about it and THEY WERE LEARNING THE LYRICS. It made me so happy that I got to share this with them. Some of them could hardly contain themselves and started dancing at their seats. We were having FUN and learning. Then about 2 weeks later, while I was setting up to help with math, one of the students came up to me completely randomly at the beginning of the day and said with almost a proud defiance:
"The sun is a MASS of incandance GAS a gigantic NUCLER FURNACE" even though the words weren't completely right the spirit was there. It was great.
