I have donated to 3 kickstarter campaigns. The favorite of which is this one: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/timothymonger/timothy-mo... It's my friend Timothy Monger's Project titled "The New Britton Sound" and it's pretty amazing. Tim's is an example of how kickstarter can be a benefit to both the artist and the donor. I pledged $50.00 and received MP3, CD, Vinyl and a nice personal note which was autographed. I'd say that is worth the investment.
I recently played a wedding with Tim and asked if he was working on any new music? He said, "I've been recording cover songs as thank you's to people that donated over $100 to the project for the past few months". If you look at his site you'll see that a $100 donation got you a recorded version of the cover song of your choice. He isn't just slapping these things together, he's putting many hours in to it. So, I'd say a $100 donation was worth the investment too.
If you don't see the value in Kickstarter, then I'd say you are definitely a bit "*fuddy duddy".
