It took a lot of google-fu but I found it; this article reminds me of our post on purposeless walking.
I'm just going to leave this here. Vaguely related: Genelec Oy is a Finnish manufacturer of truly dope studio monitors. Their budget line is kind of shit but they still make truly killer products. I have a $2800 Genelec subwoofer and it's the shizzle. I only wish they still made the 1000 series.
Good read, made me want to visit.“Silence is a resource,” it said. It could be marketed just like clean water or wild mushrooms. “In the future, people will be prepared to pay for the experience of silence.”
True silence, as remarked upon by kleinbl00 in the below #tngpodcast can be terrifying. We use sound to orient ourselves and to give us reassurance that we are indeed alive and exist. So what they're actually marketing is quiet and not silence. The sudden onset of silence is a type of change too, and this fact led Wehr to a surprise. Before his 2010 study, scientists knew that the brain reacts to the start of silences. (This ability helps us react to dangers, for example, or distinguish words in a sentence.) But Wehr’s research extended those findings by showing that, remarkably, the auditory cortex has a separate network of neurons that fire when silence begins. “When a sound suddenly stops, that’s an event just as surely as when a sound starts.”
