By this measure, most stories that offer hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds are "despicable." Most stories would fall in to this bucket, even those that revolve around love and romance. Books, film and most art are means by which to escape reality. If people watch Jericho for its potential accuracies, well they're idiots, right?

personally I'm not interested in straight hero stories or pure escapism. i see fiction as a way to relate to the existing world, and explore new modes of being. power fantasies should be recognized as such. power fantasies that serve as propaganda should be examined critically.
