I got Google+ today, and I do have to say, that at least from a design standpoint, it seems like they are keeping it a bit like its own service. Google+ might just be the social slice of the Google lineup. I do hope this is the way of things. I'd hate to see a creep that leads to the scenario I waxed about.
Like I imagined, it is very good. Better than I expected, in fact. I honestly will be closing my fb account shortly. I really dislike the 'friending' method. It doesn't reflect daily life, IMHO.
I poked around on it a bit. It seemed nice. It was spartan, and elegantly addressed the main privacy conerns I have with fb via 'circles'. It is the complete non-alignment of virtual to real life relationships on fb that are the reason why I post almost nothing there.
We'll see if I use G+ more, though I already can effectively communicate with my friends and family. I think that the real useful feature for G+ would be custom circles, so I could turn G+ into a mini social network for say, my indoor soccer team or whatever. Maybe you can do custom circles, I haven't messed with it too much.
