That part really surprised me too. I could almost imagine what it felt like in his head at that moment. I know that I have had a similar feeling in the past, but I can't quite remember when. It's very interesting that the brain can prevent adaptive learning, even re-learning. What is the gatekeeper, and can you exercise that muscle? This is relavent to that discussion we were having on Thursday. Older folk can induce plasticity, but it definitely takes longer to build up steam. I wanted to see if his son had a problem returning to a normal bike.
It would be interesting to see if he could switch back and forth and eventually gain proficiency with both bicycles. I wondered if one could try and learn to ride a bike with a steering wheel instead of handlebars as a shortcut. It's been done. You could try steering from the top of the wheel for the traditional style, or the bottom for reverse. It's not hard to drive a car that way...I wanted to see if his son had a problem returning to a normal bike.
