Good morning everyone! I found this site while trawling about for further diversions and distractions, and after lurking for a few minutes, I figured I'd take the plunge. Made a few comments here and there, poked about...I suppose the next logical step is to actually post, no?
My profession is IT, currently as a network operations tech, but really functioning more as a glorified helpdesk with some added responsibility. I also recently started attending school full-time through WGU for a B.S. in IT Security - and have a final later today for an intro course! I also managed to self-study and earn my CCENT and CCNA R/S. Networking is fun!
Outside of school and work, I'm a fan of RPGs and the occasional card or board game. I also enjoy discussing philosophy and symbolism, though for the most part it's less talking and more listening. When everyone you meet knows ten thousand things you don't, it's far more beneficial to be quiet and learn something as opposed to try and shout over them. I'm also a Freemason, and thoroughly enjoy the various activities and allegories therein. I really should get back to writing some papers on those books I meant to read, too...
Yeah, I think I'll stay here for a while. I'm shibbotech, I'm new to Hubski, and I'm pleased to make your acquaintance.
Ok this is the bit that jumped out at me. I considered joining my local chapter(?) as a younger man, but couldn't make the time commitment work. What would you say is your favorite part about being a mason? If you can tell us that is. I'm also a Freemason,
Ah, yeah, the time commitment is definitely something I'm floundering with. Given the whole "full-time student, full-time employee" status, coupled with the fact that I'm a thousand miles from where I grew up and became a Mason, it's been far too long since I've really attended a meeting. Local groups are known as Lodges, so named for the building they meet in. And I'm a pretty young man myself. It's never too late to learn more about it, or consider joining! :) My favorite part is a tossup between the reason I joined and the reason I remained active. I joined because I was drawn to the esoteric side of things - the symbolism, the allegory, the alchemy, the history. I stayed because the sense of community and fraternity was nigh overwhelming. Of course, unlimited swimming in the Fountain of Youth and sipping some wine from the Holy Grail are also perks of joining. :P Thanks for asking! If you want to know more, I'll answer to the best of my capabilities; if you start considering joining, find your local Lodge and ask around!
Nice to meet you! I'm also new here as of today. I'm a studying microbiology major and an amateur geeky journalist with a passion for video gaming, tech, and music.
You've got an amazing handle, to boot. Speaking of video gaming and music, have you ever heard of http://ocremix.org? It's a neat community of video game music remixers, with everything available for free download since it's all under fair use. I think just about everything ends up on their YouTube channel, as well. I've been listening to this remix of "UNATCO" from the original Deus Ex lately - the lines from Helios are delivered perfectly! (EDIT: it's a .org domain, not .com. Silly me!)
I think you maybe put in the wrong domain? Your link goes to an unpuchased domain. But that sounds awesome and their Youtube channel is sweet! Thanks for sharing :D
