I knew facebook would find a way to ruin virtual reality for us, but I had no idea it was going to be this bad.
It's important to remember that this only applies to content on the Oculus Store – you can still run apps downloaded elsewhere. It's primarily just a publicity thing – if they allowed adult content, they'd have to make a separate section for it, and the media would have a field day going through it. This way, they don't have to worry about that, and you can still download anything elsewhere.
That depends... I don't know too much about the platform itself, but if the OS is designed more like that of a game console, then they may be the type of asshole that actively discourages homebrew software development, charge thousands of dollars for SDK's, and push updates that intentionally brick your headset if you soft-modded it (see: Nintendo).
They have specifically stated that it will remain open – VR headsets should be more like a computer monitor than a games console. The SDK is freely available.
Don't despair, not even terrible intellectual property and copyright laws colluding with terrible business decisions can stave off VR sexbots for long.
Don't count on it. This is definitely not the case for their other product the Gear VR. You can use nothing with it that hasn't been approved. The device is locked to their Oculus Store app and only that app. It is a completely walled garden and there is little reason to think the Rift's Oculus Home app will be any different. Facebook considers total control of content for this to be of the utmost importance and they own Oculus. Just a small comment for those of us who were still holding up any kind of hope for 'side-loading' apps that were not in Facebooks app store. And a friendly reminder, Oculus HAS dropped support for Mac and Linux. They've said it's just for now, but we all know that doesn't bode well for openness in any way."Of course, this only applies to apps available through Oculus’ official app store. There will likely be unofficial app stores where users will be able to download whatever they want."
