Parker 51 Fountain Pens: I still think that these are pretty much optimal pen design. They're robust. They can write on carbon transfer paper. They keep your fingers clean (unlike most other fountain pen designs). Super easy and clean to refill. They're pleasant to use (unlike ballpoints). They're not a consumable item (unlike ballpoints). Raleigh Sports Bicycles: Not optimal bicycle design, but a tremendous value. If I wanted the very best transportation bicycle, I'd probably look at a Breezer (in the US). Alas, bicycle theft means that my commuter probably is a consumable, and the Raleigh really hits the spot here. They're cheap. The frame geometry makes them a 'playful' ride. They are robust (especially the pre-1970's models). Easy to work on (outside of the rear hub), and even easier to keep in good shape. Just get aluminum rims for it. Also, hydration bladders.
