So recently I've been totally enamored with the sweet and spicy combo that is found in many East Asian cuisines. Some quick and common examples: Pad thai and Gochujang. I love this style of food, but I'm looking to expand my knowledge of flavors and dishes - does anyone have any recommendations for a similar sweet/spicy combo from other (non East-Asian) countries/cuisines?
Check out Eve Aronoff's cook book. She's a friend of mine that owns a restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI. Great use of Moroccan spices, illu45, you would dig it too.
That looks interesting, thanks for the recommendation. Do you know where I could find more info on the cookbook? What sort of recipes does it contain, for instance? How are they broken down (by cuisine, course, etc.)? I usually like to look at cookbooks before I buy them, but it looks like Amazon may be my best choice for this particular one.
Moroccan! My partner recently got into it and there are some really fantastic combinations of flavours -- beef tajines with cinnamon and nutmeg, for instance.
Oh wow, I've never tried anything Moroccan. I might have to hunt down a restaurant to try before I attempt it on my own, so I know what to aim for. Great suggestion, thanks!

This looks excellent, and I have most of the ingredients! I'll be giving it a shot soon, thanks for the suggestion!
As odd as this sounds that is a lot of Caribbean cuisine. Fresh fruit, curry, seafood, lime. I think that there is a lot of that flavor combination that exists in the tropical world just because or abundance and the distribution of chilies and fruits. Oh also sugar...lots of sugar in the Caribbean for some reason. cough cough slavery cough
