It seems to me that there is very clearly a problem with the obsession over body image, and even this celebrity fascination or deification in general, which let's face it, even this article is guilty of, but it seems dishonest to me to label this typical tabloid garbage as 'patriarchy', or even a symptom of it.

It's an altogether different beast, rooted in different psychology, to a different end, perpetuated by a different class of people and thought. That it's focus is primarily on women doesn't mean that it has a relationship with patriarchy.

But, indeed, I think we should ask why wouldn't the tabloid articles be propagating male privilege? While it does have also something to do with celebrity admiration and over-exposure, that doesn't mean the patriarchical mode of thinking isn't present. One does not exclude the other.

One doesn't exclude the other, no, but one also doesn't imply the other. As I said, just because it's focus is on women more so than it is men, it doesn't follow that it must be associated with patriarchy. It's focus is on women likely because that's just what the consumers of celebrity tabloids will eat up and buy, and the main consumers of tabloid media are women. I can only speculate as to why those type of women would get satisfaction from the humiliation and degradation of celebrities, but I'm skeptical of the knee-jerk reaction to merely dismiss it off as patriarchy rather than give it the scrutiny and consideration it deserves.
