I wonder what the causation here is. Is it that non-believers have a case of "know thine enemy"? Or is it that we're generally more educated, so the more you know the harder suspension of disbelief becomes? Maybe we're just more curious about the world? Or is it that if you're a hardcore believer, you just don't pay attention to others' religions, because what's the point if you're already right anyway?

Mormons and Jews score nearly as high as Atheists.
I think it has to do with having a minority belief system and being thoughtful about religion.

Mormons and Jews tend to actually practice their religions and in order to do that they have to actually "study" their religious text and history. I know that christians, for the most part, don't do this. I know some christians that are very well versed in their religion (and others) but they're the exception. I think this has to do with having a "personal" relationship with Jesus. Since it's a one on one sort of thing, they don't have to study or read. They need only say grace or go to church on the major holiday's. It's more of a box to check on a census than it is true belief. Here's a great parody of the American Christian that you've likely seen
and here's a fantastic painting by my cousin, titled "Nascar Jesus"

Your final two questions articulate what I think is the best explanation. Curiosity and openness about alternative cultures.
