This part doesn't make sense to me. A tree inside a forest is protected from the full force of the wind. Otherwise, these seem very cool.
I guess if you have a steady, constant wind force pushing on the stalk, it won't give any change in orientation, which you need in order to generate a current. The article says current is generated when the discs in the stalk are under pressure, though:
