A half-century ago, a British ornithologist put forth a surprising new idea about enemies in the natural world: Maybe they aren’t always such a bad thing.

I have had my best professional years when I have had a specific individual that I considered "my nemesis". It's good to have someone that you are in direct competition with in my line of work. I work in sales and I'm given a target I need to hit each year. If I get to 100% I get a bonus and that bonus goes up every 5% over goal. My best year was 175% to goal and it was a direct result of a woman named "Angela". She and I competed fiercely every month for the top spot nationally. We both had record years and took home a lot of "bacon" as they say. While she was my "enemy" throughout, I owe her a debt of gratitude. At the end of the year Angela and I celebrated with drinks. -I bought, it was only fair.. she came in at 168% ;-)
