This Grubski challenge is silly simple. Buy a steak and cook it. Could be any cut, could be any type of meat. Get creative if you can. Would love to learn some new methods. Shoutout to past participants. See my submission in the comments. I'll run this till Feb 1st. Don't be afraid to participate.

For Christmas my brother gifted me a sous vide cooker. I'm new to all this, but I'm instantly hooked. Tonight I cooked a meal for my mother and my family. New York Strip, couscous, guacamole and sliced chicken thigh Placed chicken thighs in a bag with olive oil, some soy sauce and rosemary sprigs. Did the same with the strip. Then they cooked for 2 hours in 139 degree, circulating water. My phone alerted me when they were done. -Internet of things. Yay! Then I finished them in a crap ton of butter: The strip was amazing and the chicken thighs are more like duck breast than chicken thigh. Made some fresh guac and some couscous, thinly sliced the chicken and garnished with it. Crispy on the outside and so succulent on the inside. I took red wine and scraped the pan with the butter and used it as a garnishing sauce. The strip was perfection and had a subtle rosemary flavor.
Alright, I actually did cook a steak! Nothing special though. I just started on keto, so the timing is actually perfect. Bone-in NY strip Normally I just salt and pepper it, but I decided to go wild. Garlic, herb salt, pepper, lemon zest. Let it sit like this for an ikea trip. Copious amounts of butter in the cast iron. the result. Turned out more "medium" than I was aiming for. The flavor was great though.
OK I actually cooked all this the day after the Grubski thing went up but I just remembered to post it here!!! I cooked a rump steak (with salt and pepper) and ate it with some store bought prepared salad. It was delicious and surprisingly easy to make. This is the standard store brand rump steak - there is also the premium store brand but I decided to go for the cheaper version this time because I haven't cooked steak in years and I was worried I'd mess it up. Dessert: The hob. My crappy flat has a crappy electric hob which takes about five minutes to just heat up. Then add the time taken to get the temperature of the pan up and cooking is quite a chore. I miss gas. Wherever I live next, this will be a non-negotiable condition. I forgot to buy a mesh to catch the spitting oil so I just held a sieve over the pan while it cooked. It's a good thing that steak doesn't take very long to cook. It's definitely cooked. I would have liked this part a bit more rare. With the salad: I watched this while watching Twin Peaks. I've just finished the first season. IT'S SO GOOD. So good.
Gas is great but a good electric stovetop is not bad. But it looks like you certainly do have a crappy one. I have been there too and it is not fun. :(
Thank you for sharing! Electric stoves are no fun, especially crappy ones, but you seem to make due. I first watched Twin Peaks with my good pal cW, years ago. My wife and I would go to his place and watch. cW and his wife would have pie, coffee and cigarettes there for us. My wife and I both loved the pie and coffee. But it was just cW and I that would enjoy the cigs. Man, was that fun. That show is so amazing, but if you add in those components, while viewing it makes it all the more fun. What a phenomenal tv series. Enjoy!
Sure! Any kind of steak. Tempeh steak would count as far as I'm concerned.
Bring it Devac! Gonna give submissions another week :)
Nice. I've always enjoyed your contributions in the past. Bring it!
I don't remember signing up for this but yes I am so up for this!!!! I love steak but I don't think I've ever cooked it myself. I almost always cook quite easy food because after a long day's work I mostly just want to do nothing or spend the little remaining energy I have doing some sort of hobby (also my kitchen has those crappy electric hobs which take five minutes to heat up and half an hour to cool down). This grubski will give me an excuse to make an effort. I also don't cook beef often because it's bad for the environment (cows produce a lot of greenhouse gases) but I will make an exception in this case.
Sweet! Electric stove or not, I look forward to seeing your submission. Also, you don't have to cook beef if you don't feel comfortable, ethically. Make salmon, or some other type of filet.
Chances are decent I'll cook a steak before the first of the month.
"If you will it, it is no dream."
