Oh, man. So many good ones. 'The Nightmare' is one of my favorites. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nightmare

edit: Does it have to be from the DIA? If so, looking throuh their site, I think I'd choose Cotopaxi. Makes me think of prehistoric tmes. http://www.dia.org/object-info/baeac490-f496-4a17-b917-dd021...

Cotopaxi is breathtaking to see in person, and I almost posted it myself. But to your question, Nightmare is already in the DIA, so that's an awesome coincidence if you didn't know that.

Yeah, it's so nice I decided to add them both.

No, I didn't. That's awesome indeed.

It's strange how when something is mentioned, you start to notice it everywhere. Check out this post by scrimetime titled "The Well Hung Boy Next Door". It references the Nightmare when describing one of the porn scenes,
Small and swart, snacking avidly on Miss Kross, Deen vaguely favors the incubus in Fuseli's The Nightmare
.

Does it have to be from the DIA?

No, this is our museum. :)

Two things:

1. It doesn't have to be from the DIA -I don't think. Mine wasn't.

2. Have you ever considered that perhaps it's the horses' nightmare?

A fine thought, but I don't see how that could be: the woman is completely surrendered and helpless, the little goblin seems to be plotting how to make the situation even worse and the horse - besides being just the head of it - sugests that the things hidden in the dark are all coming out.

The little goblin on her chest is an incubus, basically a demon sent from hell to suck the life out of you by fulfilling all of your sexual desires. I don't know the significance of the horse, but I'm sure the ravenous look in his eye has something to do with the size of his dong. Some nightmare, huh?

Because of the popularity of the work, Füssli painted a number of versions.

The incubus in this one is much more sexual. Interestingly, the first has a book on the table, but this one hasn't.

Probably the book has to do with fantasy or knowledge, and whoever paid for the second one thought that education was virtuous and they didn't want to associate books with the devil.

TIL that the succubus has a male counterpart in the incubus. Thanks.

i agree, just suggesting a new thought. The horse is obviously transfixed and his gaze is pointed squarely at her "you know what". Her feet are exposed, as are her hands and there is but a thin piece of clothe covering the rest. The only way she could be more exposed is to be nude. The red blanket flows from her side like an open wound. The "Goblin" is looking right at the viewer as if to challenge us, "Hey pal, what are you going to do about this"? We are invited in to this nightmare by his direct challenge. It's a bad-ass painting.
