I think the problem most people have with religion is not religion per se but religion's externalization. Anybody whose faith focuses primarily on their place in the world and their practice as a method and means to beatification is likely to incur little wrath. Anybody whose faith focuses primarily on altering the behavior of others is gonna face controversy.

The Jews have been persecuted since the 8th century BC but because the majority of their religion is inward-facing, they've adapted and largely found a place in many non-Jewish societies. I suspect that if their religion had a proselytization component like the Mormons they'd have been wiped out before the Peloponnesian War.
