Seeing the discussion on Goosey's link to analysis of Jay Z's "99 Problems" reminded me of this great video.
Excellent lecture. I watched it last evening and excitedly wanted to discuss it with some friends. Instantly the assumption was out: what sorts of nefarious activities are you up to now? Followed by trying to convince me that talking to the cops was, in fact, the better option. Even if your guilty. Otherwise the police may be suspicious of you. Lunacy. It was very similar to when I first discovered Tor years back. You would go through extra trouble to preserve privacy? What are you hiding now? And these are smart people! Honest. These are people I have excellent deep conversations on all manner of topics with. It just seems that there is some sort of disconnect with issues involving authority. I find it quite frustrating.
Did they watch the video? Send it to them and then try to have the discussion again? And yes, this is certainly a problem, this is why people see no issues with privacy-invading laws - "Oh, if you are not a criminal you have nothing to worry about" seems to be the prevailing mindset. People don't understand that when the system is abused against them, it will be too late to change anything.
