I no longer have a girlfriend… …because I now have a fiancée! We’re currently on holiday in the Italian Alps. When I mentioned our plans for our summer vacation to kleinbl00 he went “you know, being proposed to on a lake in Como is pretty storybook” and I was like “you’re not wrong that’s for sure”. Proposing had until that point been an idea for a future day, but we’re still going strong after five oftentimes turbulent years. So after finally finding a ring two days before we left, carrying it in my camera bag where she wouldn’t have any reason to look around in, finding to a gorgeous green lakeside pergola in a beautiful village on Lake Como, and her mentioning how romantic this place is, I tell her I’d love to make a video of us with my new camera to capture this wonderful place and go down on one knee. She was completely surprised and elated. (And she loves the ring! Phew.) I’m still surprised it worked out as well as it did. I even got the video exactly the way I hoped. Not that that matters too much, but it’s the cherry on the cake that I got both the composition right as well as the technical settings that I wanted (6.2K, 30fps, shutter at 1/60 with my variable ND filter and the Eterna Fuji film setting). It helps that my new Fuji camera has been a joy to (learn to) shoot with.
Marriage is fantastic. I got so tired of "girlfriend" not reflecting my level of commitment. Congratulations, veen :)))
Thanks! Went to a few jewelers, they seem to be quite used to Yet Another Clueless Guy to Sell a Ring To. First a few visits to explore what’s possible, what’s expensive, what looks good and what doesn’t. I ended up going with the local jeweler, their limited selection of pretty nice rings was good to narrow down the choice.
I love that you spent as many lines of text on this as the proposal itself. Congrats!!!I’m still surprised it worked out as well as it did. I even got the video exactly the way I hoped. p.s. I don’t know why Italian road designers have decided vehicle clearance is one of the things to let go of when building roads in rural areas, but I hate it. The amount of near-misses with buildings, trees, and other road users in my regular width car that I really don’t want to scratch has been too damn high.
Girl Things continue to go suspiciously well with this girl, including navigating our first mini-crisis which occurred uhhhh 6 hours prior to her heading to Alaska for a week and us getting about 2.5 hours of sleep that night prior to her early morning flight. Running Other than that. Having my first experience being at a 100-mile race this upcoming weekend helping to crew a friend. Here's an article about said friend. I am "the guitarist" in the article. It's going to get weird. I'm excited to be a very small part of it. https://www.seattletimes.com/life/outdoors/seattleite-named-favorite-weirdo-for-running-ultramarathons-in-crocs/ I think I'm going to do a very rugged 100km run in September and see what happens. Why not? Work Well I can't really talk about it right now but maybe in a couple of weeks.
Congrats on the mini crisis aversion. I helped at an Iron-man(ish) event last year, my cousin was running in it. I handed out water as needed, occasionally tried to punch my cousin in the nads as he lapped past. Hope your guitar efforts are well recieved!
So a new roof is expensive. Also absolutely essential and I have the opportunity and budget to do it right. Still. I'd hoped to limp along with this roof until the house was paid off, but I guess doing it now and having my mortgage a year longer is financially similar to paying off the house a year earlier and then replacing the roof. I got one bid this morning and am expecting another this afternoon.
Yeah I need to look into that because my utility is changing rules soon. I think installed before April 1 I'd be grandfathered in on full retail net metering. I'm not sure I'll have the budget for it but I need to work out what options I have. Also I upgraded my electric panel last winter. The old one was trash and would have needed to be replaced. But now I'm in good shape there, too.
I got one bid at $12,700 and another at $16,600. Both highly reviewed on Google. Hard for me to see the additional $4000 from the second. It's a pretty simple roof, not hard to see how a complicated one could be a lot more!
