I'd say one way to remove the "karma whore" mentality is to remove seeing how many badges a person has earned (not received). Only show how many they've given away.

Still a number/level/exp counter. Still relevant to what people think of what you post.

Why not just do the badges you have left? It then becomes kind of like money, in that you might really want to reward a comment and have to earn the badge, but otherwise just lets you know something about your capabilities in the future/present, not some vanity points from the past.
