Peerblock doesn't prevent them from seeing your activity, it simply prevents them from talking directly to you. You'll still be announced in torrent swarms, show up in server logs, and so on. And of course there's no rule that some actor intent on surveying your activity must restrict themselves to the public IP addresses of the organizations designated as troublemakers by the peerblock maintainers. In practice it's useless, and only provides a false sense of security.
It's pretty stable now. The only problems I've had are if you leave it on while surfing it can tend to block sites you frequent. It's more for specifically going to bad neighborhoods on the internet if that makes sense. Leave it off when you're just browsing normally.
As a privacy advocate I can't thank you enough. I looked at the site and it appears the release hasn't been updated in 2 years. Should I be concerned? What has your personal experience been using it?
I have never had any problems as the software constantly updates its database every time you use it from iblocklist.com. iblocklist is an up to the minute list of all known blacklisted ip's. Also you can manually add any ip's to the block if desired. If you torrent, the program is very effective as it blocks all known law enforcement agencies.
Ahhh, ok then. I went to iblocklist.com and have to give them props for the extensive and thorough listing of blocked ip's. Truly impressive. It sounds like PeerBlock offers up an easy to use block list capability, as well, from reading their site. Didn't think of the torrent side of it and now that I have I'm downloading PeerBlock. Thanks for posting! Edit: Does it mistakenly block sites that you'd normally go that don't have any issues that would warrant PeerBlock blocking the ip?
Good to know. I don't use Tor, but I do like to torrent shows once in awhile.
