- The Postal Service, the synth-pop duo of Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, is reuniting for the 10th anniversary of its only album, 2003's "Give Up."
I am so beyond excited for this. The Postal Service is one of the first bands I discovered that led me away from classic rock during my early high school years. I've seen Death Cab for Cutie live before, and it was a great show. I'm not sure as to the visual aesthetic and energy of a live Postal Service show though, as it's mostly electronic and not terribly upbeat. Which leads to another thing, the music hasn't withstood the test of the time impeccably. It's fairly simple electronic music, and some people criticize it for that, saying that electronic music has developed and become so much more nuanced since this release. I can agree with that, but it doesn't take away from the music for me.
How do you all feel about this reunion? I would love to see new material, but am perfectly content with live dates and the reissue. Here's a couple of songs for those of you that are unfamiliar with them.
The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Against All Odds, this one is actually a cover of a Phil Collins song that he wrote for a soundtrack for a film of the same name.
It is a crime that they won't give us another album. Damn you Postal Service!!! -reluctantly plays Give Up for the billionth time-
New material would be so, so wonderful. Or even a couple of new cover songs, anything really. I don't doubt that any new material would be up to par with most of Give Up and their B-sides.
Yeah, we need a new album! There are only so many times I can re-listen to Such Great Heights and Sleeping In. Although I have yet to discover how many times that is.
Well ... have they reconfirmed that? I know they long claimed they would never make another album, but I can still hold out hope until they say it again this year. Also,
As a Weezer fan, believe me: I get it. I might not have loved "Beverly Hills," and the thought of going to one of their "Memories" shows, in which they play The Blue Album or Pinkerton in their entirety, is extremely appealing to me.
Yeah, Pinkerton straight through was amazing.
This is great news, I'll definitely be on the lookout for this when it comes out. That Postal Service album is fantastic. It's one of the albums my wife and I really listened to a lot when we first met.
It seems your link is broken. Here is another one: http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/dc9/2013/01/postal_service_r... The Postal Service was, like you, one of the first bands that broadened my music appreciation. Actually it surprises me that The Postal Service is getting back together. It seems the trend for bands from the early 2000's to make one or two great albums and split up. It may just be that I listened to a bunch of bands that made one album and quit, but it was a trend to me none the less. New material I look forward to, as well as more covers by other bands. My favorite cover has to be Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine.
