- The Eagles are one of the most hated bands in history.
Why?
Because they were successful, and they took themselves and their music really seriously. That’s not how you’re supposed to do it in rock and roll. You’re supposed to be on a lark, you’re not supposed to care, it’s all just supposed to happen. You luck into hits, blow all your money and thrust your arms in the air when it’s all done, in an expression that says “What the hell!”
Great read, parts really resonated with me. He does as good a job as anyone of explaining the bizarre instinctive hate for the Eagles. If you weren’t, you’ll lament you were born too late. I've felt both a dozen times. This was one of the parts that resonated. If you were there you’ll tingle.
I have to stop reading his emails in Paul Harvey's voice. It's mostly due to the "statement" paragraphs he employs so often in his writing. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's also hilarious how often he does so. "Because that's the way he writes!" "And if you don't like it, you probably never particularly cared for The Doobie Brothers." "Didn't realize Sha-Na-Na were just kidding." "The whole time." "And that's the rest of the story." All that aside, he's a pretty great writer with keen insights into The Biz. Perfect timing posting this as a bit of an indirect response and/or meta-commentary on the Mellon Collie thread. There was also this piece on vinyl and the more sinister qualities of reverence for the album that I'd read just a few days ago. Seems like there's a fair amount of debate going on lately in the minds of musically-inclined people and it might all be a result of the soundscan data showing that old is outselling new.
