Interesting how lately the trend seems to be for closer elections, when before you had things like the 1972 election. Additionally, it's interesting to see how in the 50s and 60s the democrats stopped being supported in the south as the party's goals changed.

Here's why elections are closer: both parties have drifted to the center. Only moderate Republicans and conservative Democrats win elections now. Politicians are therefore much less likely to take an extreme stand about anything in the modern political climate.
