Having worked in journalism most of my life, I enjoy HBO's "The Newsroom."
The first season presented the image of how the industry should function, and received plenty of criticism. We journalists all become cynics, and complains about the show probably reflected the frustration of watching a portrayal of a reality we wish existed. The second season shows more of what is the reality, with a touch of idealism thrown in.
If anything, the show is fun to watch for the historical context (i.e. the BP spill, Arab Spring, 2010 Congressional election). It already has me thinking ahead to what Aaron Sorkin will tackle in season 3.
Any other "Newsroom" viewers on Hubski?
I watch it, and I think it's good. Not great. I wouldn't rate it among HBO's best shows of all time, but I'm compelled enough to keep watching. I like Jeff Daniels (as a Michigander, I'm bound by law to think he's the greatest actor in history, I believe), and my gf likes Aaron Sorkin, so we kind of had to start watching. I will say that the most recent episode was amazing, and I think that the final edit was absolutely brilliant. I'm looking forward to the season finale. Also, I'm not sure they even know what will be on the agenda for season 3. There definitely could be some new news to catch up to by then.
My wife and I were considering starting this series, perhaps we will based on your enthusiasm. I originally nixed the suggestion because I have a hard time watching Jeff Daniels sometimes. I know I should like the guy since I'm from Michigan and he's a big supporter of the state, but I just don't. Never have. How is his performance on The Newsroom?
I am indifferent about Jeff Daniels. That being said, I read he received an Emmy nomination for Best Actor.
The first scene of the entire show is incredibly powerful, and Daniels pulls it off masterfully. It wouldn't surprise me to see that clip 'showcasing' him during the awards ceremony. Daniels plays main character, but the series really relies on an ensemble cast. The strength of the show lies in the interactions between characters. The relationships among characters is downright maddening, almost as twisted as "Inception," but fun to follow along. I'm a big fan of Olivia Munn's character, because she's wonderfully awkward and always has hysterical lines.
I didn't even realize that Olivia Munn was in the show? I think I'll check it out. We recently finished watching all of Battlestar Galactica and had to choose a new show to watch. -We have about 1.5 hours every couple of nights to watch television or a movie. We started watching Lost because a number of friends have suggested it. So far it is alright, I think I'll continue to watch it but I'll put The Newsroom next in line. Thanks again.
