Hey, me too. I'm already finding the DIY moderation tools handy. I wanted to follow #feminism, but this one user was clogging it with stuff I didn't want to see in that feed, so I just filtered them.
I think it turned into a Confederate flag debate, because the media found a new, refreshing angle. While other murders in the U.S. have prejudices at their root, none are so blatant. The talking heads don't have to explain racism, institutional racism, economic inequality, or anything complicated, because Roof openly hated black people.

Since that's how it happened in 2012 when it seemed as if every eligible Republican was running, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened again next year.
I think one of the biggest fears (for the party) after the 2008 Democratic primary was that Democrats would be worn from the primary debates and not show up for the general election. Maybe the party feels it's better to let Hillary take the nomination instead of making a big fight that draws out candidates' worst qualities.
