Might I also suggest clicking on the 'chatter' link at the top? It takes you to where conversation is happening with people you follow. It gets better the longer you are here as you start to 'know' and recognize some names in the community through interaction, but it's another path to interesting conversation and posts imo.

As ButterflyEffect said, your main feed won't cycle crazy fast as Hubksi is a much smaller community, but there is a lot here, and a lot of people enjoy the slower, more considered pace. I'd enjoy it as it's anybody's guess if it (the slow pace) could last as the site continues to grow :)

Oh, and welcome Loogawa.

Thanks for the welcome. Do you think most people follow a large amount of tags that interest them? Or just focus on following users, it seems like all of the focus is on following users, and I'm wondering if I shouldn't have followed a bunch of tags.

I personally follow people mostly, and used to follow based on what links they posted but shifted to following based on their comments. I don't follow too many tags, but if you want to follow tags, go for it! You can always unfollow them and switch it up to change your experience. I say go with tags if that's your first instinct :)
