I am new to hubski and I follow very few people, I follow a semi-decent I guess amount of tags... I know its a smaller site with not a crazy amount of posts, but I keep having to start at the top again and see the same posts. Do people just hide them? Or not follow tags?
If you're expecting a whole new set of posts every few hours on your feed page then that's probably an unrealistic expectation at this point in time. Most of what you see on the top will be there for a little while. However, there are a ton of different ways to see more content. Either keeping scrolling, check out the chatter page to see what people have been commenting on recently, you can go through tags and find something that interests you, or you can go through the community page to check out what individual users have been following. Additionally, you can sort by the hubwheel status which makes things even more interesting.
I like to check out global posts (click the dots in the upper right to get posts with different amounts of shares). Good stuff can get buried, even on a small site. Also, this gives one an opportunity to check out what people are about. I have had good discussions with users simply by asking them what their position is on a given post topic. Hubski has a lot of corners, which I like because I'm a real curious dude. Personally, I like that content and conversation are not served up for me to look at, as per my experience of reddit. As with anything, your mileage may vary, but there are a lot of potential miles covered when one asks other people what it's like to be in their shoes.
I personally think that following more people than tags provides the best experience. Also, following popular tags leads to more generic content. I like to follow people that share good stuff, plus some lesser used tags. Also, remember following is not friending! Don't be afraid to judiciously follow and unfollow people until your feed feels right. For example, insomniasexx and I are good pals, but she just shares too much for me. :) Still her best posts often reach me through other people that I follow. If you are comparing to Reddit, it's likely your feed will feel like a mid-sized subreddit. We tend to ruminate on the best posts a bit longer. But feel free to peruse the global posts up top, and help bring anything good into the mix by sharing and/or follow the person.
Thanks that is what I'm going to do. Its a very good point about the following is not friending. Already it seems there are people that I really like the comments of, and agree with but the types of things they are interested in and share I am not interested in.
Click on a tag or user and go through their posts. It doesn't matter if its a week, a month or two years old. Old posts get revived.
Might I also suggest clicking on the 'chatter' link at the top? It takes you to where conversation is happening with people you follow. It gets better the longer you are here as you start to 'know' and recognize some names in the community through interaction, but it's another path to interesting conversation and posts imo. As ButterflyEffect said, your main feed won't cycle crazy fast as Hubksi is a much smaller community, but there is a lot here, and a lot of people enjoy the slower, more considered pace. I'd enjoy it as it's anybody's guess if it (the slow pace) could last as the site continues to grow :) Oh, and welcome Loogawa.
I personally follow people mostly, and used to follow based on what links they posted but shifted to following based on their comments. I don't follow too many tags, but if you want to follow tags, go for it! You can always unfollow them and switch it up to change your experience. I say go with tags if that's your first instinct :)
