I'm not thinking about this just from a green perspective, but I think it's an important reminder that we don't need to shop in big box stores or chain shops when there are unique gifts available in our community. Small business and local business is so important to our society. Think of supporting an artist or artisan by buying a print or a piece of pottery, or an album from a musician, or gift certificate for a boutique spa/independent theatre/unique local restaurant, locally roasted&ground coffee, chocolate from a chocolate-maker... ect, ect. I'm actually hoping for some interesting links!
I have a few paintings and pieces of work that need custom framing. This is where I do our framing locally: http://www.areteframegallery.com I always thought they were really expensive until I realized, nope... framing is just really expensive. I tried another place once that was slightly cheaper and you definitely get what you pay for.
Quick google of Montreal led me to this gem: candied bacon jerky, beef jerky. Hate to inject myself, but Society6 is having free shipping for Cyber Monday and I sell art products and prints through them. Not to mention, tonnes of other artists! Here's friend 1 & friend 2 as well. Homemade Montreal Pies I'm gonna keep updating as I find things.
I found this Montreal website and it made me think about your question. It's a bit late for Christmas shopping, but it might be a nice resource in the future :)
Here's a good chocolate shop in my neighbourhood : http://www.houseofchocolate.co.nz/
http://www.etsy.com/listing/67953081/free-shipping-needle-fe... I've been thinking of ordering this felting kit for christmas. She's from the same town as me so I can't think of anything more local. Seems like a fun hobby :)
