I'm sourcing a bunch of music for a LGBTQ-themed edition of one of my radio shows, and strangely enough I've fallen short. I spent most of today looking around and came across some great stuff (like Rae Spoon but I still need a bit more to fill up the two hours I have to fill.
So, suggestions, anyone? Could be someone you know personally, a musician you're a fan of, absolutely anyone.
Thanks!
Rufus Wainwright has some great music. I've always liked his song "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk."
Also, Elton John was openly gay WAY before it was common to be so. He came out in a Rolling Stone interview in 1976. The guy paved the way and if you're putting together a radio show it might be a good idea to pay homage. My guess is that you're already doing so... but just in case it slipped your mind.
Oh, yeah, Elton John's definitely on the list already. Thanks, though!
I don't know any personally but here's a few I know of, off the top of my head! Indigo Girls Tegan and Sara Ani DiFranco Le Tigre Baths Carrie Brownstein ( Sleater-Kinney & Wild Flag ) Frank Ocean Oh man, I almost forgot about Scissor Sisters - if you're into electro-pop then you'll love Invisible Light.
I had some of these, but more I totally missed! Didn't realise Baths was LGBTQ, that's awesome. And Frank Ocean was a huge oversight on my behalf. Cheers!
I listened to Obsidian a bunch of times and was so sucked in by how beautiful it was and how great the lyrics were, it didn't even strike me until make the 20th time listening to Incompatible that he was clearly singing about his first boyfriend. It's the first line of the song even. I completely missed it though.
punk specifically RVIVR Spoonboy Against Me! (recently the singer came out as trans and released a whole album about it) and the crass pioneering classics, Pansy Division and Limp Wrist. i don't actually like them, to me it seems they're more novelty than anything, but they're historically important
Ah, awesome, thanks! Just quickly checked out Against Me! and they're wonderful. Cheers! Edit: Spent the last half hour listening to and reading about Against Me! and Laura Jane. Thank you so much for this.
Whoa, how did I not know that? Wow! Thanks! Incidentally, she does one of the best covers ever.
Nice! How have I not seen this before? Love her voice so much.
I remember catching it on C4 late on night, with the video of her performing it (which I've never been able to find) and I've never been able to forget it. Must remember to pick her new album (of kid's songs, but still) sometime.
