The other day, I had the idea that it might be useful to be able to build lists of posts and/or comments.
Starting today, you can build a list of posts and comments, by listing their pub ids in the url as such:
http://hubski.com/list?id=121862,121323,121447,1,1133,5584,8...
Here is this very post listed 3 times:
http://hubski.com/list?id=121928,121928,121928
I am sure that we could improve the ease of building lists, and the ease of sharing them. However, before we went too far down this road, I'd love to hear any ideas that you might have about what we might do with this functionality.
OMG can I have some help in compiling like an essential Hubski/n00b guide to Hubski list? Because that is the first immediate use for this I can think of. Will be updating this post with list URL shortly and update as it compiles. C'mon guise let's gooooo. Where is that wonderful post by thenewgreen about "Did you know?" - the list of Hubski things? In progress n00b list. http://hubski.com/list?id=86371,105134,111921,96333,118145,1... There. That's my beginning at "What is Hubski?" in a list. Or "How to Hubski." Or "Things About Hubski That I'm Going To Post In 'New To Hubski' Threads All In One Convenient List."
Here's my Hubski links that I've saved over the months: Getting started: http://hubski.com/pub?id=86371 How do you decide who to follow: http://hubski.com/pub?id=96333 Moral ignore/mute: http://hubski.com/pub?id=94303 Shortcomings: http://hubski.com/pub?id=86155 I forgot how much more laid back: http://hubski.com/pub?id=81949 hubski is maturing: http://hubski.com/pub?id=76798 hubski apathy: http://hubski.com/pub?id=64416 advantages/disadvantages over reddit: http://hubski.com/pub?id=103594 the new reddit? http://hubski.com/pub?id=95326 hubski irc: http://hubski.com/pub?id=114173 Obviously not all work perfectly for your genius idea of Hubski n00b guide but feel free to add the appropriate ones.
Well I was like "Lists...Lists...What can I possibly use lists for?" And that was what sprung to mind! Some of these will definitely be great. Thanks for sharing. Edit: Pretty sure you can control the order of the list by the order of the publication number, that's pretty sweet. "Getting started" goin' all the way to the top.
Very cool and innovative. I could definitely see using this as a quick way to build things like "Favorite stories told on hubski" or "Science stories from 2013" or "Comments that made me think" stuff like that. I'm sure you're already thinking of ways to do this, but it would be handy to have a short url version of the list.
Thanks. Yes, a short url definitely came to mind. Your saved posts page should have an associated list url, I think. Really, any feed could have one. In fact, we could redesign saving around this, which is related to an idea that we have been kicking around some time. You might want to be able to archive the lists you've built. There are quite a number of possibilities that have come to mind. That's why I want to put it out there before we commit to anything.
Interesting. It might be a good idea to deal with the collection of posts like imgur deals with a collection of images. Maybe give them their own url, like imgurs albums, and call them stories instead. 'Lists' sounds too formal and boring, a story implies a strong cohesion and that they have something to tell.
I saw 6 houses today, had a lunch appointment with a large customer and "date-night," cut me some slack.
Well, you said in a comment to mknod that So you'd archive the archives? Sounds a bit redundant. Besides, archiving is putting it away, while the list shouldn't be solely for saving stuff. What about 'collections'? Then, you can have collections of stories, of saved posts, of articles. And it's a verb! You might want to be able to archive the lists you've built.
