I just watched Blue Jasmine last week. Cate Blanchett's performance was very good. Allen has not been found guilty of a crime, and my personal suspicions based on the information that I am privy to could be as easily wrong as right. I know of someone that was accused of such a crime, where the accuser later admitted to lying. That's not to say I suspect that this is the case here. I don't have enough information in this case justify anything. My food and everything material in my life carries an unknown amount of guilt, and I am not investigating to get to the bottom of it. When our information is poor, we must rely on the law.
I watched Blue Jasmine two weeks ago too! I was surprised to see Louis C.K. there, it felt like he was playing himself (like always?). Are you of the opinion we should separate the creator from their creation? Can we still appreciate Roman Polanski's works? I watched "the pianist" before I knew anything about the pedophilia and the movie is very touching. Can will still read H.P. Lovecraft's novels even if he was a huge racist? I honestly didn't make up my mind yet and would like to know what you smart people of Hubski think about it all.
I can't apply a blanket rule to it. I did see The Pianist, but it was also before I was aware of Polanski's unpaid crime. I will make me much less likely to see another film by him, but I can't say I will boycott for sure. It would depend on the subject matter, and the context. I've read Lovecraft, and would read more. Everyone is guilty of ignorance, and some are victims of time and/or place. Polanski is particularly disgusting because he fled the consequences of his rape where his victim could not. I'd hate to give him any of my money. I don't like to make hard and fast rules such as "the creator is separate from the creation", because life is invariably more complex, and I am not sure what advantage such a rule would provide. Consistency can be an admirable trait, but not when it's simply for its own sake. Shortly after seeing Louis CK in Blue Jasmine, I saw him in American Hustle. Almost the same guy.Are you of the opinion we should separate the creator from their creation? Can we still appreciate Roman Polanski's works? I watched "the pianist" before I knew anything about the pedophilia and the movie is very touching.
Louis CK is definitely one dimensional as an actor, but that one dimension is good enough that I always love watching him. As for Woody Allen, I've seen the majority of his movies. He's one of my favorite filmmakers. I want so badly to give him the benefit of the doubt. That's all I can say. I hope that it's not true. If it were proven to be true, I don't know how that would change my opinion of his movies. I still watch Polanski movies from time to time, but always with a bit of scorn. The difference there is that the facts aren't in dispute.
Fair enough. I do think (assuming the truth lies with Mia Farrow) that it will be much harder for me to enjoy Annie Hall etc. in future. Not to say I would explicitly not watch them, but part of the experience will be gone, which should lead to me not watching them as much anyway.
