This is the classic struggle between art and business. Their motivations should run parallel but for some reason, they don't. Why haven't the financiers grasped that the best products yield the "best" returns? Because they are not interested in the "best" anything, they are interested in the "safest". They find comfort in formula not innovation. I applaud HBO for "bucking" this trend, in doing so they have been wildly successful and have produced some of the best TV in a generation. Nolte and Hoffman? Sounds like interesting casting, I'm in.

I saw the recent Jon Stewart interview with George Lucas and he openly tells a similar story of the business of Hollywood. Lucas had to produce his latest 'Red Tails' almost independently because the execs were uneasy about the fact that it is an all-black film. He goes on saying 'They just don't have any precedent for that type of movie - so it therefore becomes a risk.' There's a little bit about it here: vhttp://www.tampabay.com/blogs/media/content/george-lucas-tel...

but if you get a chance, I recommend the full interview on Comedy Central: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/mon-january-9-2012...

For some reason Lucas making a film with an all black cast sounds like a horrible, horrible idea.

I'm chuckling. And I don't know why.
