Google says it's been recommended on hubski a few times before, but George Orwell's Shooting an Elephant essay is pretty entertaining. Short, though. You can find many of his essays here And here's David Foster Wallace's On the -nearly lethal- comforts of a luxury cruise I don't read essays very often, looking forward to the suggestions of others.
I was going to say "shooting an Elephant" as well. I bought Orwell's collected essays, got about halfway through and set it down for a bit. I'll get back to it eventually. He is one of the great essayist. Reading more David Foster Wallace would probably do you no wrong, "lobster" wasn't my favorite.
