http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_film

They have Star Wars on their list.

When Ronald Reagan announced the Space Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"), he ended his speech with "May the Force be with you."

I don't know how to define a "cult classic." I know for damn sure that some upstart from UBC and some other dude from a no-name university in London don't either. The difference between us is I'm not trying to sell a book.

I didn't read the list thinking it was coming from some sort of "authority" on cult film, I just enjoyed reminiscing about films I've seen and wondering which ones should be on my list to see. The Star Wars movies are amongst those rare cult films that have broad based appeal but also a small base of uber-supportive fans. Star trek would also fall in this category IMO. Reagan also praised Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA. -Apparently he's not big on reading the lyrics.

Star Wars was the most expensive film of 1976. Blade Runner was the most expensive film of 1982. The Sound Of Music displaced Gone with the Wind for highest grossing film at the time.

I can see "favorite." I can see "great." But if you're going to pick one adjective to describe films, be accurate with it. Calling Star Wars a "cult" film is like calling Islam a "cult" religion.

I think you have a valid point. They were pretty loose with their interpretation.
