I'm actually a yoyoer myself. I've gone to and yoyoed in some competitions. It's an awesome community where almost everyone is very encouraging. It's always fun to trade yoyos and share tricks. Here is a video of me if your curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DetTDHB7Nxg

That's really you? That's amazing. A friend emailed me this link and I was blown away by the video. Keep up the great work. That's artistry.

I was just watching a TED talk about Yo-yoing and was reminded of you. How is it going? You still yo-yoing? I did end up buying one and it's a lot of fun. Hope all is well, check out that link, I think you'd enjoy it.

I haven't been around for a long time so I'm just now noticing this response but I am still yoyoing now! I just competed at Pennsylvania States a couple weeks ago! I've been in college and doing all sorts of things and haven't been on hubski for a long time but I definitely am going to return now. Also I saw that documentary when it came out and it was indeed interesting.

Dude, welcome back, it's been a while. So, I haven't picked up that yo-yo I bought in a good long while, but it's time that I did. My daughter recently turned 4 years old and while that is probably still too young to yo-yo, she would definitely think her dad was even more magical (she think's I'm a Jedi) if I were to show her some tricks on the yo-yo.

I forget, what are you studying in school again? Maybe I never knew. Anyways, I hope it's going well. Good luck with Pensylvania States competition. How'd it go? That video is bad-ass!! Nice choreography, tight moves that seem very detailed. I'm no expert, but that seemed like it could be #1. Was it?

I sure thought my dad was a jedi when I was younger. That means you're doing it right! If you need help yoyoing then Youtube is the place to go. There is a wonderful wealth of tutorials.

I am currently studying physics at Otterbein and then I will transfer to Case Western to double major in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Its a joint 5 year program. I was really proud of my prelim routine but my final routine was not the best. I ended up falling asleep briefly at the contest because we had to wake up at 4a.m. to make it to the contest. I woke up right before I went on stage so I was little out of it for my final. Overall though I was proud of how I did at the contest. I ended up placing 11th out of 36 overall.

Thats really impressive. What got you started down the path of competitive yo yoing? It's not something that you hear of every day. When I was younger it was Hacky-sacking that all of us did. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit and got pretty good at some tough maneuvers. It's also fun because it can be either a communal or a solitary endeavor.

Cool video.

It is a growing community but is still relatively very small. A long time ago my dad brought home a box of his old stuff from his parents and there was a bunch of yoyos in it and he taught me some basic throws. Then I looked up some yoyo stuff on the internet and stumbled upon some professionals and it absolutely blew my mind! So I found some tutorials on youtube, bought a good yoyo online and the rest is history!
thenewgreen  ·  4701 days ago  ·  link  ·
That's cool that you were able to share that with your dad. Do you mind me asking how much a good yoyo costs? I noticed that there are different categories of yo-yoing too. They seem to be based on how long the line is, right?
freezerdust  ·  4696 days ago  ·  link  ·
Well the different kinds of yoyoing are based on the style of play e.g. looping, string tricks, offstring, ect. I do whats called 1A or string tricks. It is the most poplar style of play. A high quality metal yoyo designed for those types of tricks are usually somewhere around $75 to $120. Although there are some high quality plastics that play very well and go for somewhere around $40. Looping yo-yos are much less expensive and usually range from about $10 to $25 and they are the traditional style of yoyo. If you would like to learn more here is a HUGE post for people new to yoyoing on the yoyonation forms: http://www.yoyonation.com/talk/index.php/topic,2488.0.html

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. I'm going to buy a yo-yo. Not an expensive one, just a starter. But dammit, I'm going to do it!

The Duncan Freehand Zero is a fantastic starter and you can often find it at toy shops and probably Walmart for very cheap.

While I absolutely refuse to step foot in or support Walmart, I will gladly buy one at a local toy store. Freehand Zero -- I'm getting one, woo-hoo!!

I find it awesome that you boycott Walmart. That's very admirable. I try to go there as little as possible but sometimes it's simply too convenient.

I went there once to buy those bags that you put leaves in... you know, the recyclable kind made of brown paper bag material. Thankfully, they were all out. I've never bought anything there. I received a $15 gift card for Walmart for christmas a few years back and gave it away to a struggling music student I knew. Fuck Walmart.
